HOLLYWOOD -- FRIDAY, Jan. 16
Wrapping the day was TechTV, that televisual revenge of the nerds. This digital cable channel admits it. They were promoting a new series called "Nerd Nation" (debuts Jan. 19 at 9 p.m.), which celebrates brainy subcultures nurturing what channel executives call "strange obsessions." Clips showed classes in faraway India training South Asian subcontinent telemarketing wanna-bes to clearly pronounce such key phrases as "certainly" and "not a problem" without an accent. (I've made 800-number help calls. I've talked to these people.)
Another film introduces folks who can't wait to be alien-abducted. The producer of"6 Days in Roswell," Roger Nygard, told us he also made "Trekkies." So he knows of what he films. He's currently editing "Trekkies 2" – it shows Enterprise-obsessed fans in South America, Europe and Australia – and hopes to shoot "Trekkies 3" in Asia and Africa. "I make films and documentaries that can be enjoyed by the profilees as well as audiences," Nygard says. Fans who've been to Trek conventions know he's on target. (Don't ask me how I know.) Understanding, affection and outright stupefaction coexist beautifully in his work.
As a matter of fact, we look forward to the inevitable epic of incredulity and terror called "TV Press Tour."
